Most people own the right products. Fewer apply them in an order that lets them work.
The rule is simple. Thinnest to thickest. A watery toner cannot get through a cream, so it goes first. A cream can sit on top of anything, so it goes last.
The morning order
- Cleanser. Your skin has done nothing overnight but rest against a pillow. A light wash is enough.
- Toner. Not the stripping kind from the nineties. A modern toner is mostly water and humectants.
- Serum. The most concentrated thing you own. It needs bare skin to reach.
- Eye cream. Pat, do not rub. The skin there is the thinnest on your face.
- Moisturiser. This seals everything underneath it.
- Sunscreen. Always last. Always.
The evening order
The same, minus the sunscreen. Nothing needs protecting from a lamp.
If you wear makeup or sunscreen, wash twice. An oil or balm first to break it down, then your usual cleanser. One wash rarely removes a full day.
The three mistakes that undo everything
Sunscreen under moisturiser. It has to sit on top or you have diluted it and covered it.
Applying to bone-dry skin. Damp skin absorbs better. Leave a little water on your face after cleansing and work quickly.
Rushing. Give each layer thirty seconds. If you pile the next one on immediately, they mix rather than layer.
Does it really matter that much
Yes, for actives. A vitamin C serum applied over a moisturiser does a fraction of what it does on bare skin.
For hydration, less so. If your toner and your moisturiser swap places, nothing terrible happens.
The order is worth learning once and then forgetting about. It becomes automatic in a week.
