A skincare set saves you from guessing which products go together. It only helps if it suits your skin.

Here is how to choose one.

Start with what your skin does, not your skin type

Skin types are a rough guide. What your skin does by six in the evening is more useful.

Looks tired and uneven? Look for vitamin C or niacinamide.

Feels tight? Look for hyaluronic acid and a richer cream.

Flushes and stings? Look for centella and a short, gentle ingredient list.

Holds its lines? Look for niacinamide, peptides and a sleeping mask.

Check the box for three things

A cleanser that is gentle, not foaming and stripping.

A moisturiser that matches your climate. Richer for dry winters, lighter for humid ones.

Sunscreen, or a plan for one. A set without sunscreen is half a routine.

Do not start everything on the same night

Patch test each piece on your inner arm first.

Add one piece every few days. If something reacts, you will know which one.

As a gift

Choose by the person's skin, not by the box. When unsure, the gentlest set is the safest choice.

Give it time

Most skin takes four to twelve weeks to show a change. Photograph your skin in the same light each week.

When to see a doctor

If a set brings on a rash, burning or swelling, stop using it and see a doctor.
