It is nine at night. You are tired. Somebody on the internet has told you to wash your face twice.
Sometimes they are right. Often they are not, and the second wash is doing your skin harm rather than good.
What it is
An oil or balm cleanser first, then your usual water-based cleanser. Two steps, one after the other, at night only.
The logic is simple chemistry. Oil dissolves oil. Water-based cleansers are built to lift sweat, dust and the day off your skin, and they are not built to shift a film that was formulated to survive water.
When it is worth doing
- You wore sunscreen. This is the big one. Sunscreen is designed to stay on through swimming and sweat. A single gentle wash does not fully remove it.
- You wore makeup, particularly foundation, long-wear anything, or waterproof mascara.
- Your day was dusty. A Highveld wind in September puts a layer on your face that a splash does not touch.
When it is a waste of time
- Any morning. You slept. Water, or one gentle cleanser, is plenty.
- A bare-face day at home. Nothing went on, so nothing needs breaking down.
- Skin that is already tight, red or stinging. Two washes on a stressed barrier makes it worse, not cleaner.
How to do it properly
- Dry hands, dry face. Water first is the most common mistake. The oil needs to reach the sunscreen, not float on a layer of water.
- Massage for a full minute. Not fifteen seconds. This is where the work happens.
- Add water and keep going. A good balm turns milky. That is the oil taking the day with it.
- Rinse, then cleanse normally. Lukewarm, and a light hand.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Chasing the squeak. That tight, clean, slightly stiff feeling is not a sign you got it right. It is a sign you stripped the oils your skin makes to hold water in.
Well-cleansed skin feels soft and slightly cushioned. Not squeaky. If yours squeaks, use a gentler second cleanser, or less of it.
The short version
If something was designed to stay on your face, wash twice. If it was not, wash once.
Your skin does not need a ritual. It needs the sunscreen off before you sleep.
